Short Story Analysis Essay

Directions: Write a well-developed (2-3 page) analytical essay in which you examine the writer’s use of literary tools to convey the overarching theme of the text.  Your essay should adhere to all MLA documentation standards. You may not incorporate outside sources for this essay. Each idea you present should be supported by textual evidence (correctly cited). You MUST include a Works Cited page since you are using your textbook as a source. Therefore, you should include in-text citations throughout the essay. A good rule of thumb is to provide at least 3 pieces of textual evidence per literary device. For example, if you choose to discuss how irony is used; you will need three examples of irony from the short story. Your grade will be based on your understanding of the text, understanding of the writer’s utilization of the literary tools, and your ability to provide textual support for your claims. It should be at least 2 full pages but no more than 3 (double-spaced). You will submit your essay electronically via CANVAS. It will be automatically checked for plagiarism by the external tool, Turnitin.com. Be sure to print or screen shot the essay submission confirmation receipt; this is your proof that it was submitted by the due date. The essay link will remain open for one week after the initial due date; however, ten points will be deducted each DAY it is late. No credit will be awarded after one week of the due date. Any work showing evidence of plagiarism will receive a zero (see Course Syllabus).
