What is the epidemiology of influenza?
There are four types of viruses that cause influenza disease. However, for humans, only
two viruses are responsible for the conditions. Influenza virus types A and B cause human
infection, while types C and D only cause disease in other animals. Influenza A can be
subdivided into different categories, for example, the H1N1 virus (Kwok et al., 2021). These
differences in the types of virus are created by neuraminidase protein which occupies the surface.
Influenza B, on the other hand, contains lineages and strains. Both forms of influenza viruses
have receptors responsible for making each species-specific. Apart from the type A and B
viruses which are notorious for causing influenzas, type C and D influenza viruses can also cause
human infection through infection of a host animal. For example, the influenza pandemics in
1918 and 2009 were caused by a bird (Kwok et al., 2021). As a result, avian flu was developed
and infected a lot of humans. These viruses affect humans because when they contact the animal
hosts, the virus changes its antigenic characters and easily becomes an infectious disease among
humans (Kwok et al., 2021). These kinds of influenza viruses are problematic since they change
their functionality and genetic component affecting the transmissibility of the influenza virus
from one person to the other.
