Due 5/13/22 @ 11:59 pm

NO LATE PENALTY – NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AS THIS IS YOUR FINAL
EXAM – DO NOT EMAIL ME YOUR LATE EXAM – IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
You must answer each essay (total of 3 essays). You must utilize the required readings from module 3 and 4 (3/22-
May [Abbott as well]), video clips [if applicable], and the movie [Brubaker]). Vague answers will result in a loss of
points.
You must be very specific in stating “who said what” – “where did the information originate”? You must use
APA citation in your responses. Lack of in-text citations will result in a loss of points. 1 or 2 in-text citations is
insufficient! Always ask yourself, “according to who” or “who said that” or “where did I obtain that information”.
Students are permitted to use 4 direct quotes maximum per question – which must be quoted APA format. (1 point per
extra quote will be deducted from your score). The lack of the use of quotation marks is a sign of plagiarism. APA style
citation for direct quotes is MANDATORY. If you are unsure how to cite properly you are expected to “google it – APA”
or check the library’s website for help. See direct link below:
APA in-text citation format
Format: Title page, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, page numbers, APA citation format. Your total response should be
approximately 6-8 pages but should certainly not exceed 10 pages.

  • The rubric used to score your mid-term exam is the rubric being used to score your final exam.

Essays: – USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES TO CLEARLY ILLUSTRATE YOUR POINT FROM THE READINGS
This is not discussion board – answers must be FULLY explained and discussed with facts not opinion.
1) Inmate Rights

  • According to the case, Pugh v. Locke (1976) “Conditions must be so debilitating that they necessarily deprive
inmates of any opportunity to rehabilitate themselves or even maintain skills already possessed” to be deemed a
violation of their constitutional right – cruel and unusual punishment. The covid pandemic created a significant
problem for our state and federal prisons that has not been seen in 100 years. Using the required readings as well
as Abbott, argue why or why not the conditions of confinement as a result of the pandemic constitute cruel and
    unusual punishment.
    2) Programming inside prison
o If we want to reduce recidivism one would argue that inmates must be provided with quality programs
while incarcerated. What are the 3 most important programs that should be made available to inmates?
You must use the required material in your response to argue your point.

3) Re-entry programs

  • The final module was spent dealing with re-entry – challenges/barriers and ways to improve their successful re-
entry including the involvement of family and prison nurseries. Using the required readings, argue what are the

most important issues that must be addressed to improve their successful re-entry. Responses that do not
incorporate all respective required readings will not earn full points.
